IMPROVING THE STUDENT'S READING COMPREHENSION THROUGH MURDER STRATEGY CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background Reading is a basic skill. This means that these skills need to be owned by everyone, not just for success during school but also throughout his life. In developed countries have been entrenched and reading activities are part and needs in daily life. Above facts prove that reading, writing, and arithmetic are important skills needed in public life. Especially with regard to the need to master the skills of reading and writing at its core, it is viewed from a perspective that is able to interact with the needs or demands of everyday life. Reading and writing skills to provide their own opportunity for someone to: 1) avoid dependency properties to others, 2) an open perspective and broader horizons for thinking about community problems, and 3) an attitude of introspection and retrospection. Reading is also a means of recreation or entertainment for the community. Reading and writing are interrelated language skills. When learning to write, someone will read his writings, similarly, two other language skills, if listening and speaking. The four skills are interrelated and constitute a unity, which cannot be separated from one another. However, in learning language skills, each skill has a chance to give emphasis. If the reading is taught, the emphasis of learning on the ability to read, while the third is the ability to support other capabilities. Likewise, when taught writing skills, other skills will serve as a support. Where we know the language is something that we support to be able to communicate. We will not be able to communicate if you do not have a lot of vocabulary, while we only will have a lot of knowledge about the vocabulary if a lot of reading. In addition, the reading will provide knowledge on the subject of study in addition to expanding horizons and as social human beings; we are individuals who could not live alone in this mortal world. We need friends, family, and many others to help. Because we need each other then the man needs a tool of communication but not a phone connector. But real communication tool that serves to connect the meanings, expressing the opinion, issued a complaint and others, none other than the language. It also will reflect the language of one's mind. The more skilled a person speaking, the brighter and clearer the way his mind. As we know, language ability was not only the ability to speak it. But a good man and true language are people who already have skills listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Someone who read a lot of course will have extensive insight, as the proverb says "the book is a window to the world" meant someone who actively and diligently reading can travel the world and learn about the entire world through books, without having to travel around the world. Is therefore very necessary in reading activities apply to students from an early age, so that later they became an avid reader. Reading is one of the key that will bring someone to the door of success, why? Because the book is a store house of knowledge. Reading is a basic requirement of a human being to live a decent and rewarding. Therefore enhance a student's reading comprehension is something that absolutely must be done in order to meet the future of younger generations more advanced. While that is happening today is a decrease of reading interest of children in Indonesia according to data released by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) can be a picture of how the reading interests of Indonesia. These data illustrate that the population of Indonesia read to obtain new information 23.5 percent of the total population. Meanwhile, with as many as 85.9 percent watching television and listening to the radio at 40.3 percent. Low reading ability children in Indonesia have an impact on the mastery of science and mathematics. Results of tests conducted Trends in Science Study (TIMSS) 2008 to the students of class II junior 50 countries in the world, showing students achievement Indonesia is ranked 36th with an average value of 474 International. These figures illustrate that the interests of Indonesia's population is still low. In fact, to increase reading, should begin from the children. However, now, even the condition of reading skills (reading literacy) Indonesian children is still low. But to make a fun read, not an easy thing. Where today we see, the students are much more fun to watch than read. In fact all knowledge can only be obtained by reading. Students feel lazy and bored to read, especially if the books they have read the textbooks. Similarly happens to high school students Muhammadiyah Kabupaten Gowa. Based on the results of an informant information that is one of the English language and literature teachers SMA Muhammadiyah said that the students have no desire or willingness to read, unless the force. Surely this will affect student achievement in itself. Not to mention the monotony of teaching methods that resulted in students a desire to learn more and grow. Particular field of study English, students need a strategy to provoke a response students' interests and to love reading. Based on the exposure of researchers to conduct research initiative to improve students' reading comprehension using strategies MURDER. Where Murder strategy stands mood, understand, recall, digest, expand, and reviews. This strategy consists of six stages, which will certainly help respond to the wishes and interests of students to read. Starting evoke the mood of the students with environmental conditions that are made as comfortable as possible, give students the chance to express what is not in understand, students are given the opportunity to freely express what they might understand with his own words, re-express what is not understood to work together to find an answer, offer to students with the atmosphere or the way of what they enjoy learning, and check back what he has in studying it. B. Problem statement Based on the previous description, the researchers formulated the study is "whether through Murder in learning strategies can improve students' reading comprehension in the field of study English?". C. Objective of the study This study focuses on the role of the use MURDER strategy in teaching reading comprehension of students, in order to improve reading skills in first grade students SMA Muhammadiyah kabupaten gowa. D. Significance of the study This study is a class action, which aims to determine whether to use Strategy MURDER, can improve reading comprehension of students who will have an impact on increasing student achievement in reading material. This research was conduct with 2 cycles. The first cycle is the stage of observation and data collection in the form of pre-test, whereas in the second stage is similar to the first cycle. Only in the second cycle there is a reflection of improvements that occurred during the first phase and post-tests as a means of measuring how far the increase in student achievement. This was done so that the mistakes that occurred in the first cycle is not repeated in the second cycle, so as to increase students' reading comprehension which is marked by increasing learning achievement.
